erne Harnish serves as an advisor to CEO's and executive teams of emerging growth firms. Having founded YEO, as chairman of the MIT/Inc/YEO "Birthing Giants" executive leadership program, and as a consultant to many Fortune 1000 firms, Verne has a wide range of knowledge and experience that are often helpful to emerging growth firms. Verne often serves as a benchmarking resource and "general practitioner" able to diagnose situations and suggest specialists or courses of action to take.

ore specifically, Verne initiates the relationship by leading a two day strategy session, after surveying all employees, gathering customer data, and examining the financial statements of the organization. As follow-up, Verne comes in once a quarter to work with the executive team and CEO on one major issue or initiative derived from the strategy session and to facilitate the implementation of the strategic plan. From this, a theme is set for the quarter, working to install a certain competency within the organization. Verne's visit also prompts a mini strategy session and lets him observe the interactions of the executive team. In addition, he usually conducts a two hour session on some topic relevant to the mid-management team or front-line associates - ranging from controlling interruptions to topics like creativity and dialogue.

hese days are dynamic and sometimes unpredictable. The goal is to surface highly charged issues of opportunity and/or get to the root of some nagging challenge within the organization. They also help the executive team step back one day each quarter and look at the overall operation and strategy. For emerging growth firms, one quarter is like a year or two for a larger firm.
